Prime Minister Narendra Modi Unveils New Parliament Building with a Symbolic Samudra Manthan Mural

Jun 2, 2023

New Delhi, June 2, 2023: In a momentous event on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s new Parliament building as part of the ambitious Central Vista project. The state-of-the-art structure, designed by renowned Indian architect Bimal Patel, stands as a testament to the rich culture, national pride, and indomitable spirit of the country. Adding to its grandeur is a magnificent Samudra Manthan mural, crafted by sculptor Naresh Kumawat, that holds deep symbolic significance.

In Hindu mythology, the tale of Samudra Manthan occupies a paramount position in the Vishnu Puran. It narrates the stirring episode of the churning of the ocean, which led to the emergence of divine goddesses, celestial beings, and invaluable treasures, including the legendary nectar of immortality known as Amrit. The words ‘samudra’ and ‘manthan’ literally translate to ‘ocean’ and ‘churning,’ respectively. Together, they epitomize the profound concept of the ‘churning of the sea.’

For sculptor Naresh Kumawat, the creation of the ‘Samudra Manthan’ mural within the new Parliament building represents the stirring of ideas and thoughts for the betterment of the public. He shared, “Around 10 months ago, discussions were underway regarding the interior design of the Parliament. We participated in these deliberations and were advised by the Ministry of Culture and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) to conceptualize something inspired by the theme of Angkor Wat and Samudra Manthan, with an Indian touch.”

The awe-inspiring mural not only captures the essence of this ancient mythological event but also symbolizes the continuous process of dialogue, brainstorming, and collaboration that takes place within the hallowed halls of democracy. As lawmakers convene to discuss the welfare of the nation, the mural serves as a poignant reminder of the significance of diverse perspectives and collective efforts in shaping India’s future.

The new Parliament building, with its captivating design and thought-provoking artwork, stands as a testament to India’s vibrant cultural heritage and the nation’s unwavering commitment to progress. It is a structure that not only inspires awe but also fosters a sense of unity and purpose as the country moves forward on its path to development.
