WhatsApp Beta for Android to Introduce Revamped Message Menu Resembling iOS Context Menu, Says WABetaInfo; User Interface Redesign Underway

May 18, 2023

WhatsApp is working on a revamped message menu for its Android app, resembling the context menu in iOS. The update, discovered in the WhatsApp beta version 2.23.11.4 for Android, offers five options upon long-pressing a message. This redesigned menu is still in development and will likely be released in a future beta update. Furthermore, WhatsApp is developing an Android user interface similar to the iPhone’s design.

According to WhatsApp development tracker WABetaInfo, the instant messaging app is redesigning the message menu for Android. It will resemble the context menu in WhatsApp for iOS, allowing users to conveniently select actions for a specific message. WABetaInfo shared a screenshot revealing five options displayed below the selected message: Delete, Forward, Reply, Keep, and Info. The current user interface in WhatsApp displays six options at the top of the chat window when a message is selected. Emoji reactions are also visible on the selected message. The redesigned layout was discovered in the WhatsApp beta version 2.23.11.4 for Android.

WhatsApp has not provided a timeline for making this improvement available to beta testers. It might introduce the feature in a beta update before releasing it on the stable channel, or there is a possibility that the feature may not be implemented at all.

In other news, WhatsApp has agreed to deregister mobile numbers detected as engaging in fraudulent activities. Telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that WhatsApp has acknowledged the importance of customer safety and will deregister users involved in fraudulent activities. This step aims to prevent scammers from calling unsuspecting consumers from international numbers on WhatsApp to commit fraud.
